Blog 1 - Getting Started

Planning my blog, I knew that I wanted to concentrate on things that I was interested in and look at types of medias that I was interested in too, for example photography, film and art. However I wanted to link these to the course that I was doing, media with Television. This was a real test for me, especially where I was going to start off.
I decided to go back to my previous visual diary from last term and see if I could find a starting off point from there. Last year we looked at identity, and I really focused on the things that I love and what make me up as a person.
I did an A level in textiles and my love for the subject and fashion really came through in my visual diary, so maybe that is something that I would like to pursue in this one? There was also a lot of art influences in there especially work from photographers and graffiti artist such as Banksy. I think that this will be a great starting off point, as I would like to think of a way that will combine the two. Throughout this blog I will be carrying out this task as well as trying to link it to my course.

Blog 2 - Hiroshi Tanabe

Hiroshi Tanabe picture – picture 1 - appendix

I got this picture from ‘Fashion Illustration Now’ by Laird Borrelli (picture 1 in the appendix is also from the same book but couldn't be scanned in or found on the internet). This is one of favourite fashion books as it has a range of different styles of drawing from ink to graphic.
I have always been inspired by the work of Hiroshi Tanabe. His work is fashion illustration but with a graphic twist – it more likes anime than the usual drawings in fashion illustrations. Some people have even compared his art to japanese wood carvings. These out of them all are my favourites. I love the colours, even though they are dark and there are only two used, it gives the picture its edge and makes them eye catching. I love the simple use of lines to make the picture come alive on the page. This picture proves that fashion and graffiti can be link together and have a lot of similarities between art and graffiti.

Blog 3: My line drawings

Picture 2 – appendix

I used inspiration from Hiroshi Tanabe and other fashion illustrators to make my own line drawings used from model shots in magazines. I think that they turned out well, especially for quick drawings and my first attempts. I just used simple line, no colour or major detail as this is how Hiroshi Tanabe normally works. My favourite is the one of the right as I think I picked all the right detail of the creases on the jacket well with the pen. These images will be a great starting off point for future drawings and future work. From here I might try other line drawings to practice and experiment with different line techniques and where I can go with this; what direction I can now go in.

Blog 4 - Banksy

Banksy is one of my favourite graffiti artists, he is one of the main reasons that I got interested in the art in the first place. So I knew that I had to find a way to blend some of his work into my visual diary. This image is one of the most famous that he has done. It is in the city of Bristol, his home town and it depicts the riots that went on there. This shows one of the many reasons why I like Banksy; his sense of humour. In this image he was trying to show how harmless the rioters actually were by making them cute white bears. This image is great as it shows colour and humour which is something that maybe I could incorporate into my drawings.

Blog 5: A way to merge the two?

To progress on, I am going to find a way to merge both of these art forms together; art and graffiti, by doing some simple line drawings like I have done in blog 3 but do them more in the style of graffiti. I will do this by studying not only Banksy’s work but also other graffiti that have followed his styles. I will look these up in my books ‘Untitled’ and Untitled 2’. Both are very good graffiti books that focus on Banksy and other artist, but also talk about the inspiration behind all the pieces. These should give me a great starting off point for merging the two.

Blog 6: My drawings of both

Picture 3/4/5 - appendix

I tried to blend both graffiti and fashion illustration to get something that combined the two. In the first picture (see picture 3 in the appendix) I did some drawings of examples of graffiti work from artists around the country. I did this to get a feel for the style of drawing. Then, in the next pictures (see picture 4 and 5) I tried to blend both into a fusion of fashion and graffiti. I think that I pulled it off with the use of lines and colour. I tried in picture 4 to just use lines to see what techniques I needed and what style of line I needed. In the picture 5 I tried to use water colour pencils and felt tips to get that spray paint feel in graffiti. I think that a blend of the two really worked well, and is something that I will use in future drawings in this coursework.

Blog 7 - Images of Banksy and other graffiti art

Some of my favourite art work is graffiti art. I have to admit that it started with the arrival of Banksy. I followed all the hype, something I don’t usually do, and I became a dedicated fan owning all of his books and even seeing his movie. I then went on to own more graffiti books including ‘Untitled’ which is where most of these images come from (images in the appendix). I love his wild sense of humour and his mix of irony in his pieces. I also like that fact that no one knows his identity which I think adds pride to his work. The book also shows other graffiti work from artists that have been knocking around for a while or those that have just started and are wanting to be like Banksy. I believe that these are art work, depict what some critics might say, and that they are a art for a modern generation making them accessible to everyone and brightening up our down-in-the-dumps streets. Picture 6 in appendix shows art from other graffiti artists that are published in the book ‘untitled’. I scanned these images in but they would not upload to blogger.

Blog 8: My outdoor pictures – graffiti art outside

Picture 7 onwards – appendix

I went out and took images of sides of buildings – especially old buildings and buildings in a rough step to add more of an atmosphere to my images. Then scanning them into my computer, I managed to erase some of the brick work using ‘paint’ or I printed the images off and tip-exed out some of the brick work. I then printed them off and using marker pens and water colours I added in my own graffiti with styles from my other drawings. I added in the style of the graffiti artist with a blend of fashion. I also tried to add humour like Banksy does in his images. I don’t think that they are as funny as his images but I do believe that they turned out well. The ones that I have used in this image are to show what the image was like before and after the edit.

Blog 9: My next step

I am now going to review back over everything that I have done and look at what my next step could be. This could be a number of things that I am going to try and establish. I need to make sure that I keep to my initial plan of doing something that combined all of my interest with those of what I am doing on the course and also try and adapt my future ideas into what I am doing on the course, i.e. media and television.

Blog 10: What ideas I can do?

I have looked back through my sketchbook and up to the point where I am to try and see what my next step could be. Looking back I have seen a lot of influences from fashion and graffiti. I may want to keep with this theme and develop it further by maybe doing some more drawings or photography work? Maybe I could do some sewing (which is a keen interest of mine), maybe do some embroidery work of graffiti art; this way it will keep in with my theme so far.
However maybe now would be a good chance to move away from this theme and maybe explore other ideas that have something to do with my subject at university? Therefore looking at film and television may be the next step forward.

Blog 11: Merging my ideas with Film and TV

Merging Film and TV with the ideas that I have already done maybe harder than it looks. I want to look at TV and Film that I enjoy but also at those that merge with the work that I have already done. I want to look at projects that are graphic and visual, but also bright, colourful and quirky and humorous; keeping in with the theme of Banksy. I will start with something easy first like TV as even though it has a wide variety of choices it is a lot smaller that Film. I will have to raid my DVD collection thoroughly for this project and see what I find.

Blog 12: Mighty Boosh – my own image

Picture 8 - appendix

The Mighty Boosh was a perfect place to start with my search as it embodies all the qualities I listed earlier. With its random and quirky characters it is funny and very colourful and visual; it looks like something straight off the pages of a Tim Burton cartoon. Looking at these images (see images of The Mighty Boosh from “The Mighty Book of Boosh” in the appendix) I know that I defiantly will use something from them, although I don’t know what yet. I will next look at Film influences to see what I could use from there and how I could merge them with the images I have found from the boosh.
The picture above is not my image but an image I found on the internet; for my images see appendix.

Blog 13: Film influences

Film is a major part of my life. If I wasn’t training to be a teacher (teaching media studies) I think that I would have like to have ended up in film. I love losing myself in the stories and the characters lives. I just think that they are great escape goats that when I have had a hard day I like to put one on and drift into a different world. I defiantly want to use film somewhere in my visual diary and visual films are what I am going to be looking out for the most. There is one film in this categories that sticks out above all the rest; Pans Labyrinth.

Blog 14: Pans Labyrinth (image)

Picture 9 onwards – appendix

Pan’s Labyrinth is my all time favourite film and its easy to see why. It has everything that I could wish for in a movie, it the perfect genre for me and it is visually stunning. Guillmero Del Toro is now my all time favourite director after seeing this and I see it a fitting tribute to include it in my work. I will look at the use of colour in the film and the various characters and see if that can inspire any drawings; copied drawings or drawings of my own work. I will then these images and ideas and add them to the others to see where I am. But I also am going to keep looking at other visual films that I can use, and I already have one other film (that I have just recently seen) in mind.

Blog 15: Pans Labyrinth and other influences (Alice in Wonderland)

I have been looking and doing some of my own drawings of Pan’s Labyrinth but what other films is there that could also be looked at? I have just recently seen Alice in Wonderland at the cinema. It was done by one of my favourite directors Tim Burton. It wasn’t the best Burton film that I have ever seen but it was as visually as they all are. It has given my some great drawings and colourful characters that I could look at and maybe mix into my other ideas and see where I get to now. Also, I think that Tim Burton could be a great influence in my work. He usually does most of his own drawings and also creates amazing characters and scenes. He may be a good person to look at further.

Blog 16: Tim Burton – Alice in Wonderland and other films

I have been watching Tim Burton films ever since Nightmare Before Christmas and have been a fan since a young age. I think that they are so gothic and executed beautifully and everything is great right down to the last detail. Some people say that Nightmare Before Christmas is his best film (visually) so I’m going to start there. However, his early work should also not be overlooked. He made a short story called Vincent which was based on a child that wanted to be Vincent Price. It was written in the style of Edgar Allen Poe’s the Raven and was done all in black and white with stop motion animation. In the Tim Burton book I have just bought there are some lovely images of Vincent so I may want to look at them as well as checking out some of the other images that he has drawn and other films that he has done.

Blog 17 - Tim Burton (images)

Picture 10 onwards – appendix

Here are just some of the images that I have found that I think will help me along in my project. I am glad that I looked at Tim Burton for my project as his work really inspires me. It is all so colourful and eye catching. What I also like is that you can tell a Tim Burton film from any other, just by looking at it visually and his directional style. These are just two of the images that have found that will help me along in my work; the others can be found in my appendix; along with drawings from “The Art Of Tim Burton” book. These two images are images of Vincent and Alice in Wonderland.

Blog 18 - Tim Burton (My Influences)

Picture 11 onwards – appendix

I have found a lot of influence looking at this Tim Burton work and have gone crazy with all the images that I have drawn. Yes some of them may not be masterpieces as most of them are all doodles, but Tim himself even said that all he does is doodles and they made a book out of his! Looking at his art work especially, looking back to how his ideas have come together and how his characters were formed from a line drawing is just amazing and inspired me to do some of my own drawings of my own characters. Will I use this work in my final piece? I don’t know, but at the minuet I’m having fun drawing and doodle and I think that’s one of the most important things about art you should have fun with it.

Blog 19 - Merging everything together

Picture 12 onwards – appendix

Merging all of these ideas together is quite hard. Although they all fit together in some way or another its hard thinking what ideas I want to use and what influences to take from everything. I think that I want to something in either photography (in a series of photographs to tell a story) or in an animation.
My final idea is this; I want to tell a story about a girl, who is in a beautiful world. She would be dancing though an enchanted forest which would be dark but also bright in places with the sun shinning though gaps in the trees. She’s skipping along when she spots a door. Curious, she opens it and steps through entering our world but as a graffiti drawing on the world. Loving her new world she begins to dance but she is getting no attention from the outside, like she doesn’t exist. She is then not loving our world because she is not been loved, not been seen. She draws a draw using chalk she finds in her pocket and leaves our world behind.
I wanted this to portray graffiti art and how no one really sees it as art and how people just ignore and don’t appreciate the beauty that it actually is. I think that it also talks about how art itself is not really as popular as it once was, especially by my generation. It is not looked at and it is not loved just like the girl in my animation/photographs.

Blog 20 - Summary

I think that I have executed my project quite well and have blended all of my work together to make something different and eye-catching. Looking back I wish that my scanner would have worked properly then I would have been able to upload everything into one place instead of having to have an appendix. However, I was working in the sketchbook anyway as I can work better that way and I find it easier to develop ideas. It also meant that people could look at images that weren’t included in my final blog.
I think that if my animation/photographs ever got made it would turn out well, although I would need help as I’ve never done anything like this before; maybe I will get the chance in the near future.
